September 2019 Spotlight: Gnarfunkel

West coast rockers Gnarfunkel are taking over Vancouver by storm with their psychedelic rock and funk sound. As they’re getting ready to play at the Railway Stage & Beer Café this Friday, September 13th, we wanted to find out more about their journey in music as a band, how it all began and where they are taking their music.

Lead singer and guitarists, Tyler and Myles first met at a party and instantly clicked over their mutual love of engineering and the local legendary Wreck Beach jams. As they began collaborating with fellow musicians, Clark and Sebastian, it was an instant hit. “From the first practice we knew that we had hit a real creative vein, and song writing was an easy collaborative process with each member adding a unique signature into the mix”. Each coming from a wide-range of influences, the band quickly created a blend of psychedelic rock, funk, hip-hop, and Latin grooves to back up their new songs.

With an established sound and incredible songs in the works, the new project needed a name. Wanting to be inspired by the west coast, they went for a surf trip to Tofino to be in nature and find the right word to describe the band. Unexpectedly, “Gnarfunkel” was written on one of the rented surfboards. “We looked up its definition, ‘something that is gnarly to a funky extreme’, and knew that we had found our name”.

Since then many of their songs stem from their surfing trips, their spiritual journeys, experiences with love or even inspired by something one of their friends said at a party. “Our music is a distillation of our shared experience of living and loving on the west coast of Canada.”  Typically each song is started by Myles and Tyler, beginning with vocal lines and chord progressions, then bringing the foundation of a song to the whole band to finish writing and record demos. Dedicated to their craft, each band member listens to each recording meticulously, making notes on how to improve the song.  A Gnarfunkel song is not complete until “each member is stoked to be playing every part of the song.”

Bringing that mindset and dedication to their live shows, their “goal is to love every part of the songs that [they] play, and hope that [their] level of stoked will resonate with [their] audience.” With attending music festivals and shows across the country, all of the band members feel passionate about working on their live sound to get to those stages and share their music with more listeners.

“Our favorite part of our live show is the resonance that we share with our audiences. We aim to play songs that cause our audiences to feel the same emotions that we feel and connect us all through that shared vibration.”
